Washington Administrative Code Standards

WAC 392-725-050
Essential for college in the high school curriculum and assessment standards:

  • College in the high school courses reflect the pedagogical, theoretical and philosophical orientation of the participating institution of higher education departments.
  • Faculty site visits ensure that courses offered through the college in the high school program are the same as the courses offered on campus.
  • Students are held to the same standards of achievement as those expected of students in on-campus sections.
  • Students are assessed using the same methods (examples: papers, portfolios, quizzes, labs, etc.) as students in on-campus sections. Participating institutions of higher education shall provide evidence of meeting the required curriculum and assessment standards of this section.
  • Conduct an end-of-term student course evaluation per NACEP standards.
  • New instructors are provided with discipline-specific training and orientation regarding, but not limited to, course curriculum, assessment criteria, pedagogy, course philosophy and administrative responsibilities and procedures prior to the instructor teaching the college in the high school course.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Teach courses aligned with Western’s outcomes to high school students
  • Ensure alignment of course content and objectives with Western’s standards and expectations
  • Develop and implement effective teaching and learning strategies
  • Assess student learning and provide feedback to students and Western’s WWUHS Program Director and Curriculum Coordinator
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and attendance
  • Participate in professional development opportunities and ongoing training
  • Foster a positive and supportive learning environment
  • Encourage students to pursue higher education and career goals
  • Collaborate with Western faculty and program administrators to ensure program quality and effectiveness

WWUHS Teacher Requirements and Approval Process

Program Requirements

To be eligible to teach in Western’s WWUHS program, teachers must meet the following criteria:

  • Earned bachelor’s degree.
  • Washington state teaching certification.
  • Washington state endorsement in specific discipline of the WWUHS course.
  • One of the following:
    • A master’s degree.
    • Five (5) years of teaching experience.
  • Completion of one of the following:
    • Western College in the High School Summer Institute
    • Western College in the High School Virtual Training

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional discipline-specific training, coursework, and/or degrees.

Discipline-Specific Requirements

In addition to the WWUHS Program participation requirements listed above, some academic departments and colleges may have additional application requirements. These will be communicated to teachers during the application process.

Biology

In addition to the requirements above, applicants who would like to teach for Biology must have one of the following…

  • A Washington state endorsement in biology and three (3) years experience teaching high school biology.
  • Master’s degree in biology or a related field.
English

No additional requirements beyond those provided above.

Environmental Sciences

In addition to the requirements above, applicants who would like to teach for Environmental Sciences must have one of the following…

  • A Washington state endorsement in biology, chemistry, or earth and space science and three (3) years experience teaching high school science classes.
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
Finance and Marketing

No additional requirements beyond those provided above.

Leadership Studies

No additional requirements beyond those provided above.

Mathematics

In addition to the requirements above, applicants who would like to teach for the Mathematics must have experience teaching mathematics classes at either the high school or college level.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree or higher in mathematics or mathematics education.
